Last week I went on a family holiday, one of the locations where we stayed at was Sanctuary Cove on the Gold Coast. It was a small community town that felt a little isolated and I tell you what, during this time I really missed being able to go down the street to get a fresh juice! A freshly pressed juice is something I like to regularly add to my daily intake of nutrients.
As a side note, one question that people commonly ask me is “what’s the difference between a juice and a smoothie?” In a juice, the fiber is separated from the actual fruit/vegetable juice to create a drink that’s jam-packed full of amazing vitamins, minerals and phytonutrients (minus the fiber). Smoothies on the other hand have it all – vitamins, minerals, phytonutrients and fiber. Also, juices are made in a juicer, smoothies are made in a blender. 🙂
Regardless of what you do or don’t believe with relation to juicing, a glass of freshly pressed juice is still going to be better than a processed packaged artificially sweetened ‘juice’ drink. Purchasing a juice off the shelf of a supermarket can sometimes (not always) be misleadingly not that healthy, well in my personal view anyway! 😉
Next time you’re in the supermarket aisle take a close look at the ingredients on the label, for example apple juice should contain one ingredient – apples!
Here’s a little low-down on how you can be mindful when purchasing juice:
- Store-Brought Pasteurised Juice – Juices that sit on the supermarket shelf for weeks often contain artificial flavours, additives, and preservatives that are added to extend the shelf life. Not only that, but by the time many of these beverages get onto the supermarket shelf, they’re natural nutritional value is often reduced and what’s more, some of them contain as much sugar as soft drinks. If you want to be mindful about your beverage choices, please try to steer clear of these juice impostors! 🙂
- Store-Bought, Pre-Packaged Raw Juice – This is a great option when you’re in a time crunch. Fresh juice can be purchased at some health food stores, healthy cafes or good supermarkets. If you need a healthy juice on-the-go, read labels carefully and choose words like no additives, no preservatives, raw, organic, and un-pasteurised.
Of course an alternative (and the best option) to the above is to pre-make your own juice, this way you know that it’s fresh and contains the most important ingredient of all – love! Also, by making it yourself freshly pressed, you’re able to mix and match the flavours depending on what you’re craving at that time. I never get bored of juice! 🙂
If you’re thinking of purchasing a new juicer, please refer to my recent blog post which juicer should I purchase to read more about the different types on the market and which juicer I personally use myself.
That’s all from me for today.
